The Beehive Collective Makin’ that Honey

Posted by on May 14, 2013 in Community, events | 2 comments

The Beehive Collective, a giving group hosted by the Triangle Community Foundation, was established six years ago around a group of women friends knitting for the better good. The Bee does not discriminate and welcomes everyone, but avidly promotes women leadership in our community.

The cool thing about the bees is it’s a giving circle and members pull talents and resources together to raise more money collectively than they could individually, just like honey bees. What a smart hive of folks! All members give the same percentage of their income but events also support the collective. An all volunteer board (Queen and King Bees are welcome!) decides to fund non-profits each year in Raleigh with needs through a grant process. Every year, the bees pick a theme for giving and they’ve had things like food sustainability and financial security – trying to stick with broad themes. In 2012, the Beehive Collective gave $25,000 to Youth Empowering Solutions (YES!) – A youth created and run program and the hive fund will aid with its latest endeavor, a clinic in Southeast Raleigh. Other smaller grants are given with even less criteria, the buzz is around something innovative and fun but has to make a difference – anyone can apply. So also in 2012, $2,000 was given to Full Circles Foundation for women empowerment. The fund will be used for a bus that will run on bio-diesel to transport low income children (k through 12) to a strong camp this summer. In the past, the bees have funded other deserving projects and causes such as Wake Up Wake County and the Interfaith Food Shuttle.

Even cooler? The Collective has given over $100,000 in just five years, reinvesting in Raleigh and putting money back in the community we love. Especially children, so they will stay here and be the future of Raleigh, how cool?!

Currently, the bees have about 37 members contributing the same percent to hive, but there’s also a student rate to become a member. Member professions range from preschool teachers, attorneys to engineers – all over the board, and ages range from about 25 to 40. But all ages and professions are welcome, and you don’t have to be a member to volunteer.

The busy bees have been working on their biggest fundraiser for the year – the Fifth Annual Bee Ball. It’s at Berkley Cafe on Saturday, May 18. Some inside scoop: our crew was told that this might be one of the last bigger events to be held at the Berkley Cafe event space so if we haven’t already given you enough reasons to support this cool organization, there’s yet another. The attire: anything goes … whatever you want to wear from cocktail dresses to bee costumes.

Ten community leaders (5 men, 5 women) are nominated for the Royalty Court, and money is raised by each nominee. Votes = money and the two top fundraising bees are crowned at midnight at the bee ball.

“My money is going to something good in Raleigh. And it’s more than I can give all by myself to make a difference,” says Sarah Collins, Beehive Collective Board Member.

We love hearing about organizations like this that are doing things for the betterment of our community. Keep it up bees; you’re all royalty to us!

Local Entrepreneur Launches New Company, FanBase

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 7, 2013

Raleigh entrepreneur releases FanBase; expectant to hit e-marketing homeruns

RALEIGH, NC, May 1, 2013 – North Carolina native, marketing guru and web designer, Will Hardison has led his team to victory. With an online application business months in the making, Hardison and his colleagues are proud to announce the launch of FanBase, LLC.

As the founder and CEO of MEDIAPLUG, formerly an innovative marketing firm in Indianapolis, Hardison gained extreme exposure to the world of new media and marketing, therefore jumping into start-up project number two: FanBase, LLC.

FanBase is a simplistic web application that can be accessed from anywhere in the world and focuses largely on assisting marketers with their email marketing efforts. But, let’s not stop there. This Customer Relationship Management tool fully integrates contact management/organization, email marketing, comprehensive analytics and reports into one system. FanBase also offers marketers a wide arrange of customized drip campaigns. Not to mention unlimited users and contacts? Sign me up, coach!

Hardison’s parents first knew he had an entrepreneurial spirit when he started an online shoe company out of their humble home in Indianapolis. Since then, Hardison has aspired to more than shoes, but still has quite an impressive collection of kicks stacked up, to say the least.

Hardison has plans to grow this online application and his future web product line nationally, but in the meantime is focused on hitting e-marketing home runs with local Raleigh business owners. “Helping those right here in my back yard is my primary focus at the moment. There’s enough business in Raleigh to provide a solid foundation for FanBase” said Hardison.
